Festivalimpressions 2018 - Friday, 23.11.
Together with Senegalese activist and rapper Fatou Diatta (known as Sister Fa),
the film festival visited the Geschwister-Scholl school.
Fatou Diatta talked in front of appr. 80 pupils about her projects in Senegal
and the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). For her it is crystal
clear: Especially young people in Senegal need to be educated about the
effects of FGM in order to achieve a future free of violence.
It became apparent during the discussion, why it also is important for German
pupils to deal with the issue of FGM: In a globalized world, they themselves
can also come in touch with girls who are threatened by FGM.
Pupils who were happy about being visited by Fatou Diatta and the festival
team.
Furthermore, Fatou Diatta spoke with the audience at the cinema Kino Museum
following a screening of Sophia Kruz´ documentary “Little
Stones”. Fatou Diatta is one of four women featured in the film,
who use their art and creativity stand up for women´s rights.
After the screening of „What will people say”, there was an audience
discussion with expert Monika Michell from the women´s rights organization
TERRE DES FEMMES. In the movie, Director Iram Haq processes her own history:
As a daughter of migrants from Pakistan, she grew up between two cultures
in Norway. When her father caught her with a boy at age 15, he kidnapped
her to Pakistan.
Monika Michell informed about points of contacts for girls who are threatened
by crimes honor crimes and abduction.
